Suggestions? Almighty Google gives me about 87 jillion products.
I want our exhaust tips to be silver again.

Steel wool. One time I used a pink one (soap) and had pixie farts out my exhaust for a few seconds

This.
I've used it for years, with great success.

Most solvents will probably do just fine, just be careful not to get one that will ruin the finish.

I tried Windex upon the suggestion of a friend and it did nothing. I didn't expect it to, really.

Rain and a little mud for abrasion.
That’s right, I don’t have tips.

Windex has a very small amout of amonia in it, much less than what you need. I can normally get mine all shiny again with some elbow grease, lightly abraisive rag if it is caked on, and a normal car wash compound. Acetone is another option if you have access to it (1M or more would be plenty strong to eat off grime and exhaust residue).

I use some random metal polish compound that my friend left me, but the exhaust never stays clean all that long.

I don’t like exhaust tips. They are like cod pieces for cars. I would try soaking them vinegar, but I haven’t tried it.

On the 914 I lightly used steel wool, though 1/2 the chrome was gone so it was mostly getting rid of rust.

I don’t clean em! WOT all over the place so I just surrender my wheels and exhaust tips to the gods of grime. Everything else is clay’d, polished, and waxed.

Smart idea for a cute ute like my wife’s CX-5. For sure!

You thought about braso? I used it to clean the wheels I had on my explorer, it made them look like they were brand new. I’ve also used it to clean old mercedes hood ornaments I’ve gotten from the junkyard, it’s made them look band new.

Mine always clean up fine with just car wash soap and a sponge. Both our cars are Mazdas as well (CX-7 and RX-8).

Steel wool and some mild solvent.
Hmm, I wonder if oven or grill cleaner in very careful application might do anything...?

Mud? Water? Maybe with some kind of soap in it if I get lucky?
